• A symposium is being held at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge on 29th May 2024 for PhD and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) interested in place-based approaches and urban energy transitions.

  • Travel to and from Cambridge, and one-night accommodation the night before the symposium will be covered for all symposium participants.

  • The symposium provides the opportunity for participants to discuss their research and build their professional network.

  • Following the symposium, a special issue will be edited based upon the presentations and discussions from the event.

  • Deadline for applications: Friday 12th April

As the inaugural event of the Place-Based Urban Energy Transitions Knowledge Network, the symposium aims to build relationships and facilitate knowledge exchange between UK-based PhD and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) currently investigating urban energy transitions using place-based perspectives. The symposium will open with a Keynote Talk from Dr Helen Pallett. During the symposium, participants will have the opportunity to present their research and participate in discussions with others engaging with similar topics.

The symposium is open to UK-based PhDs and ECRs conducting research that engages with place-based approaches or focuses on urban energy transitions. We encourage submissions from researchers from all SSH disciplines working on a range of topics related to urban energy transitions and the concept of ‘place’, including but not limited to:

  • The built environment and sustainable living
Research projects focusing on urban contexts, specifically how urban areas can incorporate place-specific characteristics of the physical, built, and social environments into approaches to the energy transition

  • Behaviours, values, community, and culture:
Research projects focusing on individual and collective locally held relationships with places that form the foundations of places. By exploring how these are incorporated into energy transitions the project can focus on policy makers to ensure that the core tenets of this sub theme are authentically, deeply engaged with to bring communities along through transitions.

  • Leadership, management, governance, education, participation, and policy
Research projects focusing on theory and practice focusing on institutional perspectives allows for impactful research that can inform more inclusive policy making.

Travel to Cambridge (trains within the UK) and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed for all selected symposium participants. Following the symposium, we are planning to edit a special issue based upon the presentations and discussions at the event!
